Cobargo is a thriving village situated about halfway (30 – 40 minute drive) between Narooma and Bega. It is a 10 – 15 minute drive to Tilba and Bermagui.
In February 1829 William Duggan Tarlinton was the first white man to set foot in the Cobargo District. It wasn’t until 1870 that the Cobargo name was listed and registered with the then Geographical Names Board. A local school began operating in February 1871 and the township then had a Post Office, General Store, Hotel, Church and several blacksmith shops. Dairying also began in the 1870’s.
Today you will still find many buildings over 100 years old and you are invited to explore and enjoy this township and its many shops, artisans, bakery and café’s.
Nearby National Trust townships are surrounded with lush volcanic farmlands, pristine rainforests, beautiful lakes and beaches. Just north of Cobargo you will find historic gold mining, dairy and cheese towns. Wadbilliga National Park offers ideal walking tracks and fabulous views.
Who knows you may love it so much, like some, you may never leave!!
